Project – L2/L118 : Accuracy International QD scope mount

  1. The L118A1 scope mount
  2. The L2A1 scope mount
  3. The L115A4 scope mount

The L118A1 scope mount

By the end of the 90s, the SAS and SBS were looking at upgrading their fleet of Accuracy International PM sniper rifles. Grand father to the more well known L96A1, these were starting to show age and its users were keen to bank on the newer Arctic Warfare rifles developped by AI for the Swedish army.

What came about was the L118A1 and a boat load of new accessories, the first being the scope mount. Contrary to the usual AI mounts, this one features a quick detach mecanism thanks to an oversized throw lever.

Good photos of the real L118A1 are scarce, but its field manual (right) offers quite a good close up of the mount.

In an heavenly twist of fate, I managed to snatch not one but two of the mounts on the cheap. The better part is one came with the SIMRAD interface front top ring while the second came with the picatinny top ring.

Two mounts for two distinct eras of possibilities.
While it came with a picatinny top ring, the second mount isn’t the shorter variant meant for the Schmidt & Bender Ultrashort scope.

The L2A1 scope mount

When the L2A1 came about it was clearly that a bigger scope than the Nightforce LPVO issued at the time was needed. The solution was fairly easy to come up with the L17A1 and QD mounts bein diverted from the L118A1 CES to the newer L2A1.

The L17A1 and QD mount are an iconic combo of the L2A1 early carreer.
One of the earliest sightings has to be this Task Force Knight SR25.
The SIMRAD interface ring isn’t always use as can be seen on this SBS 20″ L2A1.
A shorter variant of the mount exists for the Schmidt & bender Ultrashort 5-20×50 scope used by the UKSF.

The L115A4 scope mount

The QD mount’s legacy didn’t stop at the L2A1 as it was part of the initial CES issued with the L115A4. Photos of the latter being unfortunately scarce there’s not many reference images of it in use. The mount itself is 0 MOA as the A4, and the whole AX line of rifles, features canted receiver picatinny rails.

The mount as advertised by Sporting Services on the Maverick 41 limited edition rifle. Accuracy International had a small number of leftover surplus parts they used to build a limited number of rifles in the L115A4 setup. The rifles feature an AWM action in an AX chassis system.

Foreword

After years of posting my nitpicking on cloning real rifles and reenacting specific regiments on multiple social media platforms, it was time that I regroup it all in one place.

You'll find here everything I posted about on my Instagram : clone projects, kits, in the wild spotting and books I've read.

As a bonus, there will be a few complete guides on specific familly of rifles.
