Project – L2A1 : SACTARASS 20″

  1. The Sniper System in SACTARASS

The SACTARASS L2A1 is the closest thing to a lego set within the UKSF armories. The modularity is reflected in its very own name : Semi Automatic Counter Terrorism Assault Rifle and Sniper System. Issued in three barrel lenghs and two handguard sizes, the combinations are endless.

By far the least photographed on publicly available media, the 20″ L2A1 is one huge stick to carry around. Yet, since it only required a barrel extention to get the correct lengh, I couldn’t see any drawbacks on building my own extra long L2A1.

The Sniper System in SACTARASS

Let’s face it, the 16″ L2A1 is already one hell of a long beast. Suppressor attached, it’s nearly on par in lengh with the unsuppressed L115A3. The 20″ goes way beyond that. As a joke, I used to say that you have to photograph it from the International Space Station to get the whole picture sight. Holding and shouldering it feels more like a 19th century soldier hauling his Pattern 1851 Enfield rifle than a modern operator.

The 20″ L2A1 wouldn’t fit in this photo.

Otherwise, there isn’t much to say about it as it’s usually kitted in the same way as the 16″ variant. The only difference that could filter through photos has been the sporadic appearances of the AN/PVS-22 night sight.

I kept the side mounted canted RMR sight as it’s a credible use, and the Kryptek sprayed L2A1 seems to show worn paint on it’s usual emplacement.

Accessories thrown in :

  • Schmidt & Bender L17A1 stand-in*
  • Accuracy International L118A1 QD scope mount
  • Trijicon RMR on canted picatinny mount*
  • LA-5B ATPIAL*
  • Harris bipod*
  • Surefire FH762-213S flash hider*
  • Surefire FA762 suppressor*
Considering the lengh of the night sights usually associated with the 20″ variant the laser designator gets bumped to either of the 3 or 9 o’clock rails.
I had to climb on a ladder just to take these photos. There, I said it.
The AN/PVS22 night sight is a long standing UKSF accessory considering it first got use on the SR25.
Due to it sporting a Schmidt & Bender 5-20×50 Ultra short scope, this may be one of the most recent photo showcasing the 20″ L2A1.
Don’t let the magnificent Kryptek paintjob distract you from the S&B Ultrashort scope on a specific AI QD mount to match its reduced lengh. The side rail paintjob is worn out in places where accessories were attached opening the suggestion of a canted RMR to the rear and the laser designator to the front. (Credit to the Taranis blog)

Foreword

After years of posting my nitpicking on cloning real rifles and reenacting specific regiments on multiple social media platforms, it was time that I regroup it all in one place.

You'll find here everything I posted about on my Instagram : clone projects, kits, in the wild spotting and books I've read.

As a bonus, there will be a few complete guides on specific familly of rifles.
