Project – L2A1 : SACTARASS 16″

The SACTARASS L2A1 is the closest thing to a lego set within the UKSF armories. Issued in three barrel lenghs and two handguard sizes, the combinations are endless. It’s also both an airsofter and reenactor’s dream in case of all the different setups seen over the years. The modularity is reflected in its very own name : Semi Automatic Counter Terrorism Assault Rifle and Sniper System.

By far the most photographed, at least on publicly available media, the 16″ L2A1 has that big battle rifle vibe. Hence why I had to bring one to life. Just don’t get too offensed by the names battle rifle and sniper support rifle. These are entirely mine and bound to give a vague idea being the setups.

The battle rifle

Could there be something more easily than the 16″ L2A1 ? There aren’t any special lesser known airsoft convertion kit to hunt down. Buy one of the already available HK417 replicas on the market and strap on some goodies on top.

But sometimes, all the beauty comes with simplicity.

Accessories thrown in :

  • Trijicon ACOG TA01 ECOS* with piggyback Trijicon RMR*
  • Larue ACOG mount*
  • LA-5B ATPIAL*
  • Knight Armament vertical grip
  • Surefire FH762-213S flash hider*
The long handguard offers enough real estate to both attach the LA-5B and either a thermal sight or a low light sight on the 12 o’clock picatinny rail.
On the left, an ACOG toting L2A1.

The sniper support rifle

My favourite setup for the 16″ L2A1 has to be this one. Yet it’s also one I can’t get to properly finish since there aren’t any L17A1 / Schmidt & Bender 3-12×50 clone on the market. Having an extra Vector Optics Siegfried 3-12×50, I’ve found it better looking than the Spina Optics 2-12×44 when mounted on the HK417. My OCD allows it for now.

Accessories thrown in :

  • Schmidt & Bender L17A1 stand-in*
  • Accuracy International L118A1 QD scope mount
  • Trijicon RMR on canted picatinny mount*
  • LA-5B ATPIAL*
  • Harris bipod*
  • Surefire FH762-213S flash hider*
A mid 2010s variant sporting the side canted RMR and a picatinny top rail on the AI QD scope mount.
A full SFSG inspired setup : S&B scope, AI QD mount with SIMRAD top interface, CNVD thermal sight as a stand-in for the correct never replicated thermal sight and the DBAL laser designator.

Top : There’s a scope and canted RMR combo laden L2A1 in the center right of the photo.

The bonus CQB marvel

I don’t know who. I don’t know where. But sometimes it’s all about fun. You’ve just seen the L2A1 as a longer range hard hitting assault rifle lengh weapon. How about you trade it all for something that looks more CQB focused with an Eotech 552 ?

All joking aside, it wouldn’t surprise me if this specific setup was more about shooting from an helicopter than blasting indoors.

Not withstanding this being a 16″ L2A1, this is the only one I’ve ever seen with Eotech 552.

Foreword

After years of posting my nitpicking on cloning real rifles and reenacting specific regiments on multiple social media platforms, it was time that I regroup it all in one place.

You'll find here everything I posted about on my Instagram : clone projects, kits, in the wild spotting and books I've read.

As a bonus, there will be a few complete guides on specific familly of rifles.
