Books – The British Sniper : a century of evolution & The Green Meanie : L96A1

Posted on March 26, 2021August 14, 2025 by Switch

Steve Houghton is an amazingly detailled oriented writter when it comes to telling stories about British sniper rifles. There’s simply no other way to put it. In 2020 and 2021, he graced us with two amazing books :

  • The British Sniper : A century of evolution
  • The Green Meanie : L96A1

The first one details the whole bloodline of British issued precision rifles from 1915 up until the current L115A3. While the second one, you’ve guessed, offers a deep dive into the sniper rifle that sparked a revolution in military marksmanship.

Both books are perfectly illustrated in full color, showing all the tiny details from the rifles themselves to their complete equipment schedule (CES). If this wasn’t enough, Steve Houghton goes the extra mile and also captures the uniform and various accessories used by British snipers.

These aren’t just a great read, both books give a great deal of hindsight for collectors and reenactors alike.

Yes, the autor goes down to the various types of ammunition used.
Steve Houghton offers more than a glimpse at the rarer, lesser known, variants of our favourite rifles.
Both books ends with photos spanning an entire page each to better catch the details.

Foreword

After years of posting my nitpicking on cloning real rifles and reenacting specific regiments on multiple social media platforms, it was time that I regroup it all in one place.

You'll find here everything I posted about on my Instagram : clone projects, kits, in the wild spotting and books I've read.

As a bonus, there will be a few complete guides on specific familly of rifles.
